As a result, the film performed poorly at the box office and was pulled from most theaters by the end of its third week or release.. I fully admit that I haven’t been keeping up with current film releases in the past few years, as my knowledge has been largely ad hoc, based on what’s playing on my streaming services. I hadn’t heard anything about this film until I saw it on Showtime a few nights ago, and I knew almost as much about any of the parties involved. I also rarely write IMDB notes, but in this case I was drawn in by the undeservedly mediocre overall rating, skewed by one review that I find ridiculous in every way. Now, on to the film itself. As others have noted, the acting and production values ​​may be uneven, but what a story! There’s more to this than a little Schindler’s List, but this is even more remarkable, with a protagonist who has everything but a privileged position. Others have described the plot well; I won’t do that here, but as impressive as this is as a yarn, what’s more impressive is the moral complexity and humanity of almost all the characters, even the Germans, and the filmmaker’s brilliant vision that, while they’re not the main bad guys here, the Soviets are held almost as accountable as the Nazis for their actions during this time, largely giving “The Good Fight” a misnomer (as are many other things, completely unrelated to this film, like the Japanese-American internment, our bombing of the civilian population in Germany and Japan, our indifference to the suffering of European Jews, etc., etc.). I’m often moved by great cinematography, but I have to admit I was a little more than tearful watching the continuing stories of real-life characters that appear during the closing credits (don’t miss this!). This gives me a score somewhere between an 8 and a 9, but it gets the benefit of the doubt on the magnitude of the story and the need to increase the overall score here. I note that, although this film is not Polish, it is set there, making it a duo of the two best films I’ve seen in recent years, along with "Forgotten Love". Highly recommended.
